Make charcoal, bury it in the soil along with animal parts (and maybe clay pottery), wait a century or so, and you get terra preta soil.
Terra preta is miraculous stuff. It seems to actually create more of itself. It makes leached, clayey, infertile soil into fertile soil that crops can be grown on sustainably.
